What’s the difference between mentoring and coaching?

So what’s the difference between mentoring and coaching?

Mentoring is about supporting an individual by being a sounding-board for their ideas, a supporter, a confidante and an experienced shoulder they can lean on. Having a mentor they can speak to on a regular basis can make a big difference to employee morale, professional development and staff retention.

Coaching is about rectifying specific problems or helping an individual to develop in particular ways These might have been identified during an Annual Appraisal. So an individual might be coached throughout the year to improve specific areas such as: presentation or communication skills, management of meetings, assertive communication, project planning and management, time management, creative/lateral thinking, or pro-active versus reactive behaviours.
